Isolated DC/DC converters are used whenever it is desirable to isolate the power source of a particular part of the circuit from the rest of the circuit. Example application includes breaking of ground loops to audio circuits (main cause of hum and motorboating), isolation to improve noise rejection and safety, to simply generating a negative voltage source from a single positive power source.
