Robot Sensing: IR Speed Sensor Module

The IR speed sensor module uses a photo interrupter to measure the rotational speed of a motor. The photo interrupter emits a continuous IR beam that causes the digital output of the speed sensor module to change each time this beam is interrupted. Hence, rotational speed of motors can be accurately measured by installing a slotted disc on the drive shaft, and using the sensor to measure the rate the slotted disc cuts the beam. This produces a stream of pulses at the sensor output in proportion to the speed of the motor.
